AI in education” refers to the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to contribute to teaching, learning and teacher professional development experiences. This includes personalised learning platforms, assessment tools, tutoring systems, and data analysis tools that support educators in understanding student needs. The integration of AI in education aims to improve educational outcomes and foster engagement (
UNESCO). AI in education is an evolving area that presents potential benefits but also involves a number of risks (including considerations related to effectiveness, ethics, data protection, and appropriate use in school contexts).
“AI in education” includes a broad range of tools that can generate text, images, or other content, answer questions, or support tasks based on patterns in large amounts of data. This includes tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or AI features built into platforms you may already use. It does not refer to general digital tools like search engines, email, or presentation software unless they have a built-in AI functionality.
Examples of AI use in education include (but are not limited to): using ChatGPT to draft communications to parents and teachers, using AI-powered tools to support staff administration and/or reporting, or using AI platforms to monitor student progress at a whole-school level.
