Welcome to this NEW project about retirement in the UK

The following is our screener for our forthcoming 3-hour in-person focus groups about retirement in the UK. Groups will be taking place across various regions in the UK (Manchester, Newcastle, Cardiff, Nottingham, Belfast, Birmingham, Edinburgh and London).

We’re looking for people aged 50 and over, who are either retired or working, from different types of households across the UK to take part. 

Groups are being held at the following locations, dates and various times, with refreshments provided at all venues:

  • Manchester M2 on Tuesday 29th September
  • Newcastle NE1 on Wednesday 30th September
  • Cardiff CF10 on Thursday 8th October
  • Nottingham NG1 on Monday 12th October
  • Belfast BT1 on Wednesday 21st October
  • Birmingham B4 on Thursday 12th November
  • Edinburgh EH1 on Monday 16th November
  • London EC1V between 17th Novemeber - 25th November 

If selected to take part, you'll be paid £80 as a thank you for your time.

What is this project about?
This project is part of an ongoing research programme establishing Retirement Living Standards for the UK. These are helping people in planning for retirement, giving them an idea of the level of income they would need to have a particular standard of living in retirement. Prior to this research, there had been little information available to show people what income they would need to give them the living standards they might expect in retirement.

In this project, we are asking people from different types of households to take part in groups to discuss what people need to reach two different living standards in retirement. The project is funded by Pensions UK (previously the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association). The findings of the research are used to establish distinct retirement living standards and to set out the income needed to reach these. The research is used by Pensions UK and its members to develop pension planning tools and shape the public conversation about retirement and pensions. This research has played a key part of the Second Pensions Commission, informing definitions of ‘adequacy’.


In order to assess your suitability for this project we need to ask you some questions. We are looking for a range of responses, so please answer these questions as carefully and as accurately as you possibly can. The answers given will be used as the basis for deciding on your suitability for these sessions, and hence whether we can call you to discuss this further and check through your answers, at which point we may or may not be able to offer you a place in one of the sessions.

Please note: you should only apply if you are definitely able commit the time to participate in this project,  if you are chosen it means others will be rejected... To have people cancel or no show is costly to all parties involved, and may result in your no longer receiving invitations to part.
