Thank you for clicking through to our survey.

Lithium-ion battery (LiB) technology is changing the boating world, from the simplest uses of mobile phones and rechargeable torches, to the adoption of powered e-bike by crew members. And then there is the revolution in the ability to power domestic and propulsion systems offering increasing freedom and opportunities.

However, lithium-ion batteries can deliver a huge amount of power, as with any energy or power system, there are risks that need to be controlled and mitigated to give continued safety and protection to you and your crew as well as other people and property.

To help the Boat Safety Scheme understand the size and nature of the risks, we are asking boat owners and users to help. Your participation will help ensure safer boating.

The following sets out our aims for this survey
  1. To establish current extent and likely future use and charging of lithium-ion battery powered devices on boats across the various categories of device (i. small portable, i.e. smartphones, ii. e-bikes/e-scooters, iii. large portable, i.e. rechargeable tools and iv. boat-installed lithium-ion batteries). The risk profile changes as the capacity rating of the batteries increases.
  2. To establish current knowledge of boat users concerning the potential risks from the use and charging lithium-ion batteries on boats across the various categories of device.
  3. To better understand the attitude of boat users to the associated lithium-ion battery risks.
  4. To establish any unmet needs for BSS lithium-ion battery safety awareness information.
  5. To establish any historic actual and near miss lithium-ion battery incidents on boats.
This survey is intended for those aged 18 and above, so if you are under 18, thank you for your interest in the subject. Please read and follow our advice on the use of lithium-ion powered devices and batteries, but only people over the age of 18 can participate in this survey.
