Patent landscape analysis in the field of advanced materials - Survey questionnaire for company representatives_General link

Survey questionnaire for company representatives

Introduction

This survey is being conducted as part of the Patent landscape analysis in the field of advanced materials study, carried out by PPMI (Part of the Verian Group), IDEA Consult, and INCENTiM-KU Leuven for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. Please see the letter of recommendation provided by the European Commission for information about the study.

Advanced materials play a critical role in driving innovation and addressing Europe’s strategic goals, particularly in areas like sustainability, digitalisation, and clean energy. At the same time, effective intellectual property (IP) management is key to unlocking the potential of these materials, supporting economic growth, fostering collaboration, and ensuring Europe’s global competitiveness.

We have identified you as a company that is active in the advanced materials sector. The questions in this survey will include the following:
  • Your company’s main and secondary intellectual property (IP) protection strategies in the field of advanced materials,
  • Your experience with patent filing processes, including comparisons between Europe, the United States, and China,
  • How your company uses and commercialises patents, including licensing, strategic motivations, and any barriers faced,
  • Your company’s use of alternative IP management strategies such as trade secrets, open access, defensive publication, etc,
  • Your company’s collaboration with academic institutions to support patent commercialisation and innovation uptake.
In the period 2010-2019, the EU’s share of advanced materials patents in the world visibly declined. This occurred despite an uprising trend in R&D in most innovation markets between 2016-2021.

Your input in this survey is crucial. It can help improve our understanding of this trend and inform updated policy measures that could ultimately improve market uptake of advanced materials. This is expected to contribute to a more favourable innovation landscape benefiting European businesses.

This survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
