Commercial waste survey

As part of our community’s commitment to rethinking waste, Strathcona County has developed a 10-year Waste Roadmap that identifies the importance of community-wide responsibility for waste management. Residential users have been part of the Green Routine for over 15 years, and it’s time to expand the program beyond the curb. 

Initial engagement with the business community on this topic began in 2020 and continued in 2022. Through this work, we heard that: 

• Commercial sector needs to play a bigger role.​ 

• Programs should be convenient, cost-effective, fair and consistent. ​ 

• A number of tools should be considered including recognition programs, pilots, incentive models and regulation.  

• Strathcona County should provide support.   

Strathcona County is continuing engagement on this topic with local businesses and institutions to understand opportunities for waste management improvements and help shape future program implementation.
