OpenActive
OpenActive is a community-led open data initiative for the sport and physical activity sector. OpenActive helps to tackle the problem of inactivity by helping its community members to publish standardised open data about physical activities, and to promote innovation in making it easier to find and book these opportunities online.
The Open Data Institute
The Open Data Institute (ODI) is a non-profit company, founded in 2012 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Sir Nigel Shadbolt, with a mission to work with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem.
The ODI currently stewards OpenActive, including:
- Improving the governance of OpenActive.
- Maintaining the technical infrastructure and standards and providing on-boarding support.
- Identifying and supporting new use case communities.
- Measuring OpenActive’s impact.

Survey duration: approximately 10 minutes
Following some initial consultation and research last year, the OpenActive Steering Committee recommended that OpenActive should be led by an independent organisation as soon as practical. The ODI is now working with Sport England, and the Steering Committee, to develop a viable business plan for this new operating model. We want to understand the views of the community on how OpenActive should be stewarded and funded in the future so that the initiative supports the goals of its stakeholders. This survey is part of that process which will inform the business plan and design of the future organisation.
