Role of skill vs. chance in games

Skill vs. chance in games

Games differ in their relative importance of skill vs chance. While there are statistical methods for examining these, they have not been done for most existing competitive games. Therefore, as a substitute, we would like to survey gamers and rely upon the perceptions until data becomes available. Below, we have compiled a list of popular games. Please rate only the games you are familiar with.

You will see the results after taking the survey.
1. How would you estimate the relative importance of skill vs. chance in these games?
  • A pure chance game is defined as one where the winning chance is always 50-50, no matter who is playing (e.g., coin toss).
  • A pure skill game is defined as one where the better player always wins. Probably no games like this exist, but some may come close.

The games are shown in a random order to prevent order from having an effect.
