Care Certificate Consultation 2021

Care Certificate Standards

The Care Certificate was launched in April 2015 and over the past six years, thousands of health and social care support workers have successfully met the standards.

Since the launch, standards have been updated where there have been changes to legislation e.g. the introduction of GDPR and changes to the Resuscitation guidelines. In 2021, however, it was agreed that a refresh of all the Care Certificate standards should be completed. To do this HEE, Skills for Care and Skills for Health carried out a desk top review of all 15 standards and consulted with subject matter experts to ensure the standards continue to reflect current best practice across health and social care.

As partners in the development and maintenance of the Care Certificate, we remain committed to ensuring that it remains applicable to both health and social care and reduce any burden on organisations delivering the standards now and in the future. We have endeavoured to keep changes to a minimum. The consultation process will be focused on consideration of the standards where there are proposed changes.

The standards affected are:

1. Understand your role
2. Your personal development
4. Equality and diversity
5. Work in a person-centred way
6. Communication
7. Privacy and dignity
8. Fluids and nutrition
9. Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disability
10. Safeguarding adults
11. Safeguarding Children
13. Health and Safety
15. Infection prevention and control

Standard 9 includes an additional question on whether Autism should be included now or whether it is more appropriate to wait for the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training to be rolled out next year.

Please download the refreshed standard documents here before you start so that you can refer to them whilst you are completing the survey. You may also want to download the current version of the standards for comparison.
