SHCSW Apprenticeship Standard Consultation 2021

Welcome

Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Healthcare Support Worker.

Background: Apprenticeship Standards describe the high-level knowledge, skills and behaviours required to carry out a defined occupation. They are developed by employer led Trailblazer groups and are available for a range of different occupations from level 2 through to 7.  The apprenticeship standard for Senior Healthcare Support Worker is at level 3.

The Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship standard is a core and options standard, which means the apprentice has to complete the core and select one option. The options within the standard are:

1. Adult nursing support
2. Maternity support
3. Theatre support
4. Mental health support
5. Children and young people support
6. Allied health profession – therapy support

You will be able to choose which option/s you answer against.

Rationale for refreshing the standard for this occupation: The Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship standard has been in use for several years.  In the meantime the format of the standards and the requirements set by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IFATE) have evolved.  The Trailblazer group has reconvened to refresh the standard and bring it in line with current requirements.

Structure of the standard: Trailblazers must develop standards that comply with the criteria set out by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education in their 'How To' Guide. The criteria mean that the standard must:

1. Be completed in line with their template
2. Describe an occupation which is defined and distinct (with minimum overlap with other apprenticeship standards)
3. Use high level descriptors rather than providing a detailed curriculum.

Unlike the current apprenticeship standard, the new format includes duties to which all the knowledge, skills and behaviour statements are mapped.

Full details of apprenticeships commonly used in the health sector can be found on HASO.
