Online Masterclasses are subject based and are two hours long. They consist of a topic based lecture and interactive activity, led by a SOAS academic. There are also workshops and a Q&A session with Student Ambassadors.
- "Creaturely Anthropology: The Entangled Worlds of Humans and Other Animals"
- This Masterclass explores a fairly recent trend in the academic field of Social Anthropology, one which focuses on "multispecies" worlds, where animals and other non-human species are more than mere supplements to human life. They are, rather, central actors in social life and research.
- What possibilities and problems does this “multispecies” focus present to a discipline like anthropology, which has “the human” as its traditional remit? How do different human cultures and communities interact with the many creatures that co-inhabit their worlds? What methodological implications are there if one is to study "beyond the human"? The talk aims to address these core questions through a range of theories and case examples, from "saintly animals" to "GM pets" to "companion species".
- Participants will develop their critical thinking and analytical skills.
