Survey: "The situation of theatres in the EU Member States"

We kindly invite you to complete this web survey. The survey is part of the ongoing study “The situation of theatres in the EU Member States” commissioned by Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission. This assignment is implemented by PPMI and KEA European Affairs.

The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive mapping of the social and economic profile of the theatre sector, including different support schemes existing in the EU Member States. The study is the first EU-wide and comprehensive study in gathering data on the European theatre sector. It will contribute to the development of the European Theatre Initiative, which seeks to provide better support to the theatre sector at a European level.

We would very much appreciate your cooperation on this important study!

Purpose of the survey questionnaire
We aim to collect data covering different aspects of the theatre sector. Survey questions focus on such aspects as funding models of theatre companies, employment conditions of theatre professionals, collaboration within the sector and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Target audience
We aim to collect responses across all EU Member States (but also welcome responses from countries participating in Creative Europe programme). We are looking forward to receiving responses from persons representing the following stakeholder groups:
  • Individual theatre companies (theatre venues, production companies, groups or ensembles, festivals, etc.);
  • Theatre professionals (artists, directors, technical staff, university lecturers, theatre education pedagogues, etc.);
  • Education providing institutions (drama schools and academies, universities, informal learning institutions, etc.);
  • Institutions representing the sector (associations, networks, policy institutions etc.) and other professional groups.
Please note that the study is dedicated to the theatre sub-sector specifically, as it has not been the subject matter of studies or evaluations on the European level before. Hence, such categories of performing arts as musicals, opera and ballet, circus, or dance fall outside of the scope of this study.

Type of data required
The questionnaire primarily focuses on the years 2019 and 2020. The purpose is to capture both the current situation and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the theatre sector. Most of the survey questions will ask you to provide quantitative information. In addition, there will be several qualitative questions.

Technical aspects
Once you begin the survey, you can save the progress made with the survey and continue later (see the toolbar at the top of each page). However, we suggest reviewing the survey questionnaire in advance. This will allow preparing the data necessary for filling-in the survey in one go. You can download the survey questionnaire by clicking on the relevant group below.
